Arita Porcelain was first produced in the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture in northern Kyushu. Its 400 year history includes centuries of export to Europe and a broad range of technical innovations by artisans. Today, an innovative process has created the Arita Porcelain dial that is the centerpiece of the new Presage collection.
From the Presage Classic Series—timepieces that embody the essence of Japanese refinement—the Ruri Cobalt Blue edition stands as a tribute to one of Japan’s most revered traditional crafts: Arita porcelain. Its deep cobalt blue dial, created through a complex glazing process, reflects over 400 years of porcelain artistry originating in Arita, Saga Prefecture. The dial’s radiating pattern and rich tonal gradation evoke the depth, transparency, and quiet brilliance of fine porcelain, offering a visual experience unlike any other in modern watchmaking.
Crafted under the supervision of master artisan Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, each dial is meticulously formed by Toshiaki Kawaguchi and his team at a historic Arita workshop established in 1830. The porcelain used is a specially engineered high‑strength formulation—more than four times stronger than traditional porcelain—allowing the dial to withstand the demands of everyday wear while preserving its delicate beauty. Every dial undergoes a multi‑stage molding and firing process, including multiple firings at precisely controlled temperatures. Subtle variations in the glaze and pattern ensure that each piece possesses its own unique character.
